Pricing

I offer both personal (cheap) or commercial use (expensive) licenses as well as a variety of other photo products, such as prints, coffee mugs, and even neckties, basecap caps, and refrigerator magnets, through Smugmug.com and Zazzle.com (although I confess no one has yet ordered a necktie).

A special word about ordering prints might be in order. Please note you can purchase a personal use license for any image on the site for only $10 and take it to the printer yourself. This is a rather extraordinarily low price, but I'd rather sell a lot of photos than price them at $100 or more, as though I'm Ansel Adams. You might just disagree and respectfully decline to purchase that image. But I don't think you're going to panic at a price of $10. (I never claimed to be a marketing genius, but this makes sense to me).

But back to the printing issue: As far as I can see, here are the pros and cons of ordering online through Smug or Zazzle versus going to a place like Staples or even Walmart.

PRINTS & FRAMING

Print Options Pros Cons
Ordering Online

Prints: Order it and forget it; it will show up neatly protected in a tube or flat box; take it to the frame shop, forget it again until it's ready.

Framing: Having been burned twice by online framing services, sorry, I can't think of any pros. Well, just one: it's oten faster than your local framing shop might be.

Prints: You really will have almost forgotten about it by the time it arrives, having waited in the order que and then for the UPS delivery man; everyone wants to add shipping and handling and send prints ground for $6-8 versus just dropping it in a box and sending it USPS, which would cost only $4.

If the person running the machine the morning they make your print wasn't paying attention don't be surprised if the contrast or brightness is not what you expected. You get a guarantee, but then you wait even longer this time since you have to send it back and take your chances again.

Framing: My experience was that I could have done a better job myself with frames from a hobby shop and precut matting, so I didn't order online again. Let me know if you have good experiences, and with which sites, so I can stand corrected if need be.

Purchase the Digital Image & Take it yourself

Actually, a great option since you can use the digital over and over again where when you order a print, that's it.

Prints: You only wait half a day, and, if it's not right, most any photo printing service will print it again for you at no charge.

Framing: Most Hobby Lobby's have a great framing shop and often have beautiful frames on sale. You also can demand a redo if they scratch the frame in the process or it's unsatisfactory for other reasons. Lots of local framing shops do great work, also.

Prints: You have to take it yourself.

Framing: A good framing shop with reasonable prices generally has a lot of customers, and I've found the wait here in Las Cruces can be almost a month long.

OTHER PHOTO PRODUCTS

Both SmugMug.com and Zazzle.com offer great prices, efficient order processing, and good shipping departments. I prefer to get my prints made locally, but for online services they are both world class.

If you find an image you like in our Site Gallery you will be able to order a wide range of products, including prints, framed prints, posters, mouse pads, coffee mugs, t-shirts, key chains, and about any other photo product you can imagine.

Click here to enter our Zazzle.com Gallery... Creating a separate product for each photo in Zazzle would be a full time job, and not many people really want an Organ Mountains refrigerator magnet or basecap cap, so I don't bother to keep up with Zazzle. There is a Zazzle product of each type for the "Sunset at Eagle Point" image that you can use as an example. If you should want any of the Zazzle photo products from one of my other photos, just drop me a line and I'll make one for you. Zazzle gallery is new and not yet complete.
